It will allow the river crossing to reopen to cars, buses and motorcyclists earlier than previously planned and while the restoration takes place. The truss structure and the bridge works will require both planning permission and listed building consent. It was reopened in 2021, to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic while stabilisation works were undertaken. Hammersmith Bridge was fully closed in 2020 on public safety grounds, following identification of micro-fractures in the 136-year-old structure.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has commissioned Foster + Partners with COWI to present their planning proposal to install a temporary truss (effectively a temporary bridge) to facilitate the full strengthening and restoration of Hammersmith Bridge.

We have made it clear we can only raise that amount of money via a road user charge or toll. Hammersmith & Fulham Council (H&F) has been told by the government to pay an unprecedented 33% of the original estimated £141m to £163m repair bill which would normally have been paid in large part by Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT). It is part of Britain’s engineering heritage and a national landmark. It is a Grade II* listed structure made out of wood and wrought iron with the suspension held in place by cast iron pedestals.
Hammersmith Bridge, built in 1887, is one of the world's oldest suspension bridges which is why it is also one of Britain's most expensive to repair.
